Why Does My Computer Keep Asking for a BitLocker Recovery Key?

BACK TO THE USER · EVERYDAY HOW-TO

Windows suddenly displays a blue recovery screen and wants a 48-digit number you've never thought about. That's BitLocker protecting encrypted storage—not a password you can simply guess.

The quick answer

A BitLocker recovery key is a 48-digit code used to unlock an encrypted drive when Windows cannot unlock it automatically. A firmware, security, or hardware change can trigger recovery. The correct next step is to find the saved key, not to format or reset the drive.

Find the key ID first

On the recovery screen, note the beginning of the displayed Recovery Key ID. If several keys exist in an account, the ID helps you choose the right one. Do not post the actual 48-digit recovery key publicly or read it to an unexpected caller.

Where the key might be stored

  1. From another trusted device, sign in to the Microsoft account associated with the computer and visit Microsoft's recovery key page.
  2. If the computer belongs to a workplace or school, ask its authorized IT administrator; the key may be held by the organization.
  3. Look for a printed copy, a file saved on a USB drive, or another location used when encryption was enabled.
  4. Match the Recovery Key ID before entering a key.

Why did it ask today?

Changes in firmware, boot configuration, hardware, or security measurements can cause BitLocker to request extra verification. A recovery prompt alone doesn't prove the drive is damaged or that somebody hacked the computer.

What not to do

Do not initialize, format, reinstall Windows, or erase the drive while important files remain inaccessible. Those actions can permanently destroy data. Microsoft cannot recreate a missing BitLocker recovery key, and legitimate repair work cannot magically bypass strong encryption.

If you can't find the key

Review all legitimate accounts and recovery locations, including anyone who originally configured the PC. If the key is truly unavailable, reinstalling Windows may make the computer usable but will not recover the encrypted files. Discuss that consequence before proceeding.
