A clear next step, even when the problem isn’t clear.

When your computer won’t behave, it can interrupt work, keep you from your files and turn a simple task into a frustrating afternoon. You don’t need to diagnose it before asking for help.

I start with what changed and what the computer is doing. A software fault can resemble a hardware problem, so the goal is to understand the cause before recommending a repair, reinstall, upgrade or replacement.

You explain the problem. I explain the options.

Tell me the error message, what changed recently and which files matter most. You’ll work directly with James, with the scope and cost discussed before work begins.

Windows problems

Help with startup errors, blue screens, failed updates, driver conflicts and applications that freeze or crash. I check the symptoms and discuss a repair or reinstall when appropriate.

If a move to Windows 11 is the goal, compatibility and the condition of the computer need checking first.

Mac problems

Help with macOS startup issues, slow performance, failed updates and troublesome applications. I review the Mac model, installed software and symptoms before recommending a route.

Supported software and hardware condition affect the options; a newer macOS version is not always the right answer.

Your files come first

Photos, documents and business files deserve a plan before major changes. Tell me what is backed up and what you cannot afford to lose.

Backup, transfer or recovery work is discussed separately. If a drive may be failing, further testing or reinstalling can be the wrong next step.

A fresh start shouldn’t mean surprises.

A reinstall can be useful, but it is a decision to plan—not the first response to every problem. Before proceeding, we’ll discuss your files, the applications you need, account access and any separate backup work.

Some programs will need reinstalling, and licenses or sign-ins may be required. If the hardware is the issue or the repair no longer makes sense, I’ll explain the alternatives.

1. Tell me what’s happening

Call or send a message with the symptoms, computer model and recent changes. A photo of the error can help; you don’t need the technical vocabulary.

2. Choose a sensible plan

We’ll decide whether remote help or a workshop assessment fits, then discuss the likely work and cost. Visits and drop-offs are arranged in advance.

3. Know what happens next

Once the problem is understood, I’ll explain the work performed, anything you need to reinstall or sign into, and practical next steps for your computer.

A few things you may be wondering.

Can you fix this remotely?

Some software issues can be handled remotely when the computer starts and has a working internet connection. Startup failures and suspected hardware faults may need a workshop assessment. Tell me what you’re seeing and we’ll choose a suitable route.

What will it cost?

Workshop labor is $60 per hour. The $40 deposit is credited toward your labor total; parts are billed separately. Remote help is $40 per half-hour. Additional data recovery work is separate; we’ll confirm the scope before starting.

If the OS problem cannot be resolved and your files need retrieving before a reinstall, the $120 data recovery service may be needed. We’ll discuss that route before proceeding; recovery is not guaranteed.

What should I have ready?

Have the computer model, any error message and a brief description of what changed. For a laptop appointment, bring its charger. Let me know about backups and the programs you depend on. You can enter passwords yourself when access is needed.

What if my files are missing?

Stop using the affected drive and ask before trying more fixes. A reinstall is different from recovering files. We can discuss data recovery options separately; recovery is never guaranteed.
