What Should I Do With My Windows 10 Computer Now?

BACK TO THE USER · EVERYDAY HOW-TO

Windows 10 didn't suddenly stop working when support ended. The bigger question is whether it's sensible to keep putting an unsupported computer on the internet without a security plan.

The quick answer

Microsoft ended standard support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Your PC may still run, but ordinary security and feature support has ended. Check whether the computer can move to Windows 11, whether it's eligible for a temporary Extended Security Updates program, or whether replacement makes better sense.

Check whether Windows 11 is supported

Use Microsoft's official PC Health Check or Windows Update eligibility information. Compatibility involves the processor, security features such as TPM 2.0, memory, storage, and other requirements. A computer that can be forced to run Windows 11 with workarounds isn't necessarily officially supported.

Back up before upgrading

Copy your important files to an independent drive or trusted backup service and confirm you can open them. Record specialty software, printers, passwords, and license information. An operating-system upgrade is not a replacement for having a recoverable copy of your data.

What if the computer isn't eligible?

Microsoft's Extended Security Updates (ESU) program can provide certain security patches for eligible Windows 10 computers during a transition. It isn't a full restoration of ordinary support or feature upgrades. Check Microsoft's current eligibility, enrollment, and terms rather than relying on an old article.

Replace, repurpose, or keep offline?

If the computer is too old for the software you need or costly to repair, a supported replacement may be sensible. An older machine can still have limited offline uses, but connecting it to sensitive accounts and browsing freely without security updates carries more risk. Don't assume antivirus alone makes an unsupported operating system safe.

Make a practical decision

  1. Check Windows 11 compatibility.
  2. Back up your files and software requirements.
  3. Review current ESU eligibility if you need extra transition time.
  4. Compare a suitable replacement with the real cost of keeping old hardware productive.
