Why Does Windows Keep Asking Me to Sign In?
BACK TO THE USER · EVERYDAY HOW-TO
You already logged in this morning, so why is Windows asking again? The answer may be a sleep setting, a PIN issue, an app that needs its own account, or a credential that has expired.
The quick answer
First identify which sign-in prompt you're seeing. A Windows lock screen is different from a Microsoft 365 request, OneDrive login, browser account prompt, or security verification message.
If it's the Windows lock screen
Windows may require authentication after Sleep, screen lock, or a period of inactivity. Open Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options and review when Windows asks you to sign in again. Device policies on workplace computers may be managed by an administrator.
If an app keeps asking
OneDrive, Outlook, and Microsoft Store can request sign-in independently of your Windows profile. Check whether the password was recently changed, the subscription or organization account is active, or the app has a pending verification request. Don't enter credentials into a lookalike pop-up until you verify which application is asking.
When your PIN fails
A PIN problem may be specific to Windows Hello. Look for a legitimate I forgot my PIN recovery option and confirm the account type. Avoid repeatedly guessing or using internet 'PIN bypass' tools; some recovery changes can affect access to encrypted files.
How to narrow down the cause
- Record the exact wording and which app or screen displays the request.
- Check whether it happens after Sleep, Restart, or only when opening one program.
- Review Settings → Accounts for an account requiring attention.
- If the prompt names a work or school organization, contact its administrator if you cannot complete verification.
Don't disable security blindly
Having Windows lock after inactivity is a useful protection, particularly on shared or portable devices. Fix repeated unexpected prompts, but don't remove all authentication just to avoid typing a password.
When to get help
If the account is locked, recovery options no longer work, or sign-in suddenly changes after an update, gather the exact error and your available recovery methods before making account changes.
