How to Move Pictures From Your Phone to Your Computer
BACK TO THE USER · FILES & FOLDERS
Your phone is overflowing with pictures, and you want them safely on your PC. Before erasing anything from the phone, make sure you know whether you're copying originals, downloading from the cloud, or just looking at thumbnails.
For most Android phones: use a USB cable
- Connect your unlocked phone to the PC with a USB cable that supports data, not charging only.
- On the phone, look for a USB notification and choose File transfer if needed.
- On Windows, open File Explorer and select your phone under This PC.
- Find photos in folders such as DCIM or Pictures. Copy them to a new folder on the computer.
Exact labels vary between Android brands. If nothing appears, unlock the phone, try another USB port, and check whether the cable can transfer data.
For iPhone: use the Windows Photos app or Apple-supported tools
Connect the iPhone to the PC, unlock it, and approve the Trust This Computer or photo-access prompt if asked. In Windows, open the Photos app and choose Import to select connected-device pictures. Some setups require Apple Devices or other Apple software to establish the connection.
If iCloud Photos is set to optimize iPhone storage, some full-resolution originals may live in iCloud rather than on the phone. Download originals through supported iCloud methods when necessary.
Cloud photos need a slightly different plan
If your pictures are stored in Google Photos or iCloud Photos, check the web or desktop app for a legitimate download option. Don't assume every image visible in a cloud library has already been downloaded to the PC.
Copy first. Delete later.
Make a folder named something like Phone Photos — 2026. Copy a few photos and videos, open them, and check the dates and file counts. After the full transfer, keep a second backup before deleting anything from the phone. Cloud photo deletion can also remove images from synced devices; read the confirmation carefully.
What if some photos are missing?
Check hidden albums, photo app folders, messaging-app downloads, and whether some items are only in cloud storage. Videos can be much larger than pictures, so give transfers time to complete and ensure the PC has enough free space.
