Why Do I Have Two Desktop Folders?
BACK TO THE USER · FILES & FOLDERS
Your shortcuts are on one Desktop, your saved documents appear on another, and Windows insists both are called Desktop. It may look like a duplicate. Often, OneDrive is redirecting the Desktop folder behind the scenes.
There can be more than one Desktop location
Windows gives each user account a Desktop folder, normally under C:\Users\YourName\Desktop. When OneDrive's folder backup is enabled, your active Desktop may instead be under C:\Users\YourName\OneDrive\Desktop. Those are two different locations, even though both folders can be named Desktop.
Find out which Desktop you're actually using
- Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.
- Click Desktop in the navigation pane.
- Click the address bar to see or copy the full folder location.
- If the path includes OneDrive, the Desktop is likely being backed up or synced through OneDrive.
You may also see a Desktop under This PC or in your user folder. Seeing multiple entries does not automatically mean Windows copied everything twice.
Before you start dragging things around
Don't delete either Desktop folder just because it looks duplicated. Check where each folder points and whether it contains unique files. Moving files out of a OneDrive-synced Desktop can also affect what is visible on other devices using that account.
Look at OneDrive's cloud icon in the notification area. Its settings include options for managing folder backup. If you want to stop backing up Desktop, use OneDrive's supported folder-backup controls and read the prompts about where files will remain. Don't just rename or delete the OneDrive folder.
What if the icons disappeared?
First sign in to the Windows account you normally use and check whether the files are in the other Desktop folder. Also check OneDrive online and its Recycle Bin if you suspect something was deleted or synced away. Be cautious about creating a new empty Desktop folder as a “fix.”
Bottom line
Two Desktop folders usually means two folder paths, not two Windows desktops. Locate the active one, identify whether OneDrive is involved, and verify your files before changing sync settings.
