Why Is My Internet Slower Than I'm Paying For?

BACK TO THE USER · INTERNET & EMAIL

You're paying for a fast connection, but the speed test says otherwise. The trick is measuring the right thing: your provider's connection, your router, and your device's Wi-Fi are three different potential bottlenecks.

The quick answer

Test with a wired Ethernet connection to a suitable computer and router before judging the internet provider. Wi-Fi tests can be limited by distance, older hardware, interference, or how busy the network is.

Make the test fair

  1. Pause large downloads, cloud backups, streaming, and game updates.
  2. Connect a computer by Ethernet if practical; verify the cable and Ethernet port support the speeds you expect.
  3. Use a reputable speed test and repeat it at different times.
  4. Compare download and upload rates with the details of your plan, including whether the plan is advertised as 'up to' a certain speed.

When only Wi-Fi is slow

If Ethernet performs well but Wi-Fi doesn't, investigate router placement, band selection, device capabilities, and interference. A device using 2.4 GHz across several rooms won't necessarily reach a gigabit plan's headline speed. Older Wi-Fi adapters can also be the limiting factor.

Check your equipment

Some routers, switches, USB network adapters, and cables negotiate at 100 Mbps when you expect 1 Gbps or more. A single slow port anywhere along the path can cap a wired test. On a computer, look at the network adapter's negotiated link speed—not just the internet speed-test result.

Think about timing

Performance that collapses only every evening may involve congestion, overloaded home equipment, or many simultaneous users. Keep a short log of times, speed-test results, and whether the test was wired or wireless. That evidence is more useful to support than a single screenshot.

When to contact the provider

If a properly configured, capable wired device repeatedly falls far below the promised service under fair test conditions, ask the provider to check line health and equipment. The right solution might be a service repair, not a more expensive plan.
