Should I Unplug My Router When Things Stop Working?

BACK TO THE USER · INTERNET & EMAIL

Unplugging the router has become the universal answer to every internet complaint. Sometimes it works beautifully. Other times it erases the clues or interrupts something that was already fixing itself.

The quick answer

A normal restart is a reasonable troubleshooting step when several devices have connection issues. But there's a big difference between power cycling a router and performing a factory reset. Avoid the reset button unless you intend to rebuild its settings.

Before touching the power cord

Check whether the problem affects only one device or your entire home. If just one laptop is offline, rebooting the router may not help. Look for service-outage notices, disconnected cables, and obvious power failures. A blinking light during an active firmware update is a reason to wait and consult the manual, not yank power.

How to power cycle safely

  1. Save any work dependent on a stable connection. Calls, security cameras, or smart-home services may disconnect briefly.
  2. If your modem or fiber terminal and router are separate, disconnect their power according to your provider's guidance.
  3. Wait roughly 30 seconds, then reconnect the modem or ONT and allow it to establish service.
  4. Reconnect the router and allow a few minutes for the network to return.
  5. Test more than one device.

Why a restart can help

Like a computer, a router can occasionally get stuck handling a connection or process. Restarting clears its current working state and asks it to reconnect. That's a temporary recovery, not a permanent cure for weak Wi-Fi, failing hardware, or a provider line problem.

Do not press Reset casually

Holding a recessed Reset button can erase the wireless name, password, parental controls, port forwards, and other settings. If someone configured a business VPN or specialty device on the network, losing those settings can be more disruptive than the original problem.

If you need to restart every day

That's a symptom worth investigating. Check airflow, heat, firmware, power stability, cable condition, and ISP signal levels. Repeated resets shouldn't be accepted as normal household maintenance.
