Connected to Wi-Fi, but No Internet. What Gives?
BACK TO THE USER · INTERNET & EMAIL
Your laptop says it's connected, yet websites refuse to load. That little Wi-Fi symbol is telling you the computer can reach your router—not promising the router can reach the internet.
The quick answer
First check whether other devices can get online using the same Wi-Fi. If everything is offline, investigate the modem, router, or internet provider. If just one device is affected, start with that device's connection.
Find out how wide the problem is
- Try a website on your phone while Wi-Fi is on and mobile data is off.
- Try a second site or app on the computer; one website can be down independently.
- Check whether your router or modem has an internet-status light indicating a connection fault.
- If you have an Ethernet cable, try a wired connection to help distinguish Wi-Fi coverage from internet service.
When just one Windows device is offline
In Windows 11, open Settings → Network & internet. Turn Wi-Fi off and on, confirm Airplane mode is off, and reconnect to your network. If necessary, choose Wi-Fi → Manage known networks, forget your network, and reconnect using the correct password.
When everyone is offline
Restart the modem and router in the order your provider recommends. For separate devices, commonly you disconnect both from power, wait about 30 seconds, power the modem first, wait for it to settle, and then power the router. If you have a phone or television service through that equipment, a restart can briefly interrupt it.
What not to try first
Don't factory-reset the router or change DNS settings just because the internet stopped for five minutes. A factory reset can erase the Wi-Fi name, password, and provider configuration. Likewise, Windows' Network reset is a last-resort option because it resets network adapters and settings.
When to call your provider
If every device is offline after a proper restart, check the provider's outage notices using mobile data or call its verified support number. If only your computer fails, a local networking or software issue is more likely.
