Why Does My Internet Work in One Room but Not Another?
BACK TO THE USER · INTERNET & EMAIL
The living room streams perfectly, but the bedroom acts like it's miles from civilization. Usually the problem is wireless coverage, interference, or where the router happens to be sitting.
The quick answer
Wi-Fi signal loses strength as it passes through walls, floors, furniture, and appliances. If a device works near the router but fails in a distant room, improve the coverage path before paying your provider for a faster plan.
Check whether distance is the difference
Take the same phone or laptop to the room with the router and test again. Then walk toward the troublesome location. If the connection deteriorates gradually, weak coverage or interference is likely. If only one device struggles while others work in that room, the device's Wi-Fi adapter may be part of the problem.
Move the router strategically
Put the access point in a reasonably central, elevated, open location—not behind a television, inside a metal cabinet, or on the floor next to a refrigerator. Keep it away from dense masonry, metal ducts, and other electronics when practical. Router antennas, if present, should be positioned according to their manufacturer's guidance.
Understand the bands
2.4 GHz Wi-Fi can often reach farther through typical obstacles, while 5 GHz commonly delivers better throughput nearby with less reach. Automatic band steering is useful, but an older device or smart-home gadget may behave better on a specific band. Don't change settings without noting the originals.
When one router isn't enough
In a large or unusually shaped home, a properly placed access point or mesh system can improve coverage. A wired Ethernet backhaul between access points is often more dependable than a wireless hop, especially across distant rooms. A cheap repeater in a spot with already terrible signal may repeat a terrible signal.
Before buying hardware
Test the connection close to the router and from the problem room at a similar time of day. Check whether the issue is Wi-Fi or a general provider outage. Coverage problems require better placement and access points, not simply a higher advertised internet speed.
