My Computer Turns On, but the Screen Is Black
BACK TO THE USER · POWER & STARTUP
You hear fans or see lights, but the display stays black. That doesn't tell us yet whether Windows is stuck, the monitor lost its signal, or the computer isn't completing startup.
The quick answer
Start by figuring out whether the screen is the problem or the computer is. Do not open the case or reset Windows before trying the safe external checks.
Check the monitor, not just the computer
- Confirm the monitor has power and its power indicator is on.
- Use the monitor's menu to choose the correct input, such as HDMI or DisplayPort.
- Reseat the video cable at both ends while power is off. Try a known-working cable or input if available.
- For a desktop with a dedicated graphics card, verify the display cable is plugged into the graphics card's output rather than an inactive motherboard port.
If the monitor shows its own menu or a No Signal message, its panel can probably display an image, but it may not be receiving one from the computer.
Does Windows seem to be running?
Listen for the Windows sign-in sound or notice whether the keyboard's Caps Lock light responds. On Windows, Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B may restart the graphics driver when the OS is alive; the screen may blink or beep. It cannot fix a machine that never reaches Windows.
Try an external display on a laptop
If a laptop appears to boot, connect a known-working external monitor and use the laptop's display-toggle key or Windows + P if Windows is responding. An external picture suggests investigating the internal display, cable, brightness, or backlight—not necessarily the whole motherboard.
When to stop guessing
If the screen never shows even the manufacturer's logo, the computer shuts off repeatedly, or you smell something hot or electrical, stop forcing restarts. Repeated power cycling can complicate a failing drive or power fault. If valuable files are on the machine, tell the technician data preservation comes first.
One clue that helps
Report whether you can see a manufacturer logo, whether the monitor says No Signal, and whether another display works. Those three observations narrow the possibilities far more than 'it turns on but it's black.'
