Why Is My Laptop Battery Not Charging?

BACK TO THE USER · POWER & STARTUP

The charger is plugged in, but the battery percentage refuses to budge. That can mean a bad outlet, the wrong charger, a battery-preservation setting, or a battery that has reached the end of its useful life.

The quick answer

Start with the simple things: confirm the outlet works, inspect the adapter and cable, and check whether the laptop reports Plugged in. If it runs from AC power but won't charge, the charger, charging port, battery settings, and battery health are all possibilities.

Check the power path

  1. Try a known-working wall outlet directly, not a crowded power strip.
  2. Reseat the charger at the wall, power brick, and laptop. Some adapters have two detachable sections.
  3. Look for frayed insulation, bent plugs, scorch marks, or a loose port. Stop using visibly damaged equipment.
  4. On USB-C laptops, use a charger that supports the laptop's required power delivery. A phone charger may be too weak.

Is the computer limiting charging on purpose?

Some manufacturers offer battery-health settings that cap charging around 60–80 percent. That's not necessarily a fault. Open the manufacturer's app or BIOS settings to look for battery conservation or charge thresholds. If the charge stops consistently at the configured limit, the setting may be doing exactly what it was designed to do.

Test how it behaves while shut down

Save your work, shut down, connect the charger, and check whether a charge light turns on. Give the battery some time if it was completely empty. A deeply discharged battery may not start the laptop immediately. If an otherwise healthy laptop runs on the adapter but never holds a charge, battery replacement may be appropriate.

Know when to stop

Swelling, a bulging case, lifting keyboard or touchpad, heat concentrated around the battery, or a chemical smell means stop charging and using the laptop. Do not puncture or try to flatten a battery. Seek qualified service.

What's worth repairing?

Replacing a removable battery is different from repairing a soldered charging circuit or USB-C port. An accurate diagnosis should compare the cost of repair with the laptop's age and overall condition rather than assuming every charging problem requires a new computer.
