Why Does My Printer Keep Printing Blank Pages?
BACK TO THE USER · PRINTERS & DEVICES
The printer feeds paper perfectly and produces absolutely nothing on it. Before you buy a new machine, figure out whether the missing ink is a supply problem, a blocked printhead, or something being sent from the computer.
The quick answer
Use the printer's built-in test or nozzle-check page, if available. If that page is blank too, concentrate on ink, toner, cartridges, or printhead maintenance. If the printer's own test works, investigate the computer, document, and driver.
Start with supplies
Check whether ink or toner is depleted, a new cartridge still has protective tape attached, or an installation latch isn't fully closed. Some inkjets can report ink remaining even when no ink reaches the paper; status indicators aren't perfect measurements.
Try the manufacturer's maintenance tools
In the printer menu or official software, look for Nozzle Check, Printhead Cleaning, or an equivalent diagnostic. Run the recommended process once and compare the result. Repeated aggressive cleaning can consume substantial ink, so follow the manual instead of starting endless cycles.
What if the internal test looks good?
- Print a simple text document instead of the original PDF or web page.
- Check whether the document contains white text or an unusual print layer.
- Confirm the correct printer and paper settings are selected.
- Try printing from another device to compare.
Laser printers have different causes
Laser equipment uses toner and image-forming components rather than liquid inkjet printheads. Blank output can involve toner cartridges, protective seals, imaging components, or internal faults. Follow the manufacturer instructions; don't touch hot fuser components or disassemble a machine while powered.
When to stop cleaning
If a long-unused inkjet refuses to produce a nozzle test after reasonable maintenance, the printhead may be blocked or damaged. A replacement can cost more than the printer is worth, particularly on low-cost consumer models. Get an estimate before buying expensive supplies on a guess.
