My Printer Works From My Phone but Not My Computer

BACK TO THE USER · PRINTERS & DEVICES

If your phone can print but your Windows computer can't, that's a valuable clue. The printer isn't necessarily broken; Windows may be using the wrong installation, port, or network connection.

The quick answer

If a phone prints successfully over the same home network, focus first on the computer's printer setup. Confirm Windows is connected to the intended network and is sending jobs to the correct printer—not an old copy or disconnected port.

Make sure the tests are comparable

Some phones can print through cloud services or Bluetooth rather than the same local connection Windows uses. Verify how the phone sends jobs. If it uses the printer's Wi-Fi connection and the computer is on another guest network, the difference may be expected.

Find duplicate printer entries

Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners. You may see entries like 'Printer,' 'Printer (Copy 1),' and a driver-named version. Try identifying the model that is currently online. Removing the wrong entry can erase custom preferences, so note which one works first.

Check the stuck queue

  1. Open the selected printer's queue.
  2. Cancel a stuck job that is preventing new jobs from proceeding.
  3. Make sure printing is not paused or set to work offline.
  4. Print a small test page and note the exact error if it fails.

Re-add the printer deliberately

If the entry is wrong or stale, use Add device in Printers & scanners and follow Windows or the manufacturer's instructions. Network printers may work more consistently with a correctly configured address or official driver rather than an old automatically discovered entry.

When a driver matters

Basic printing may work with a generic driver, but scanning, duplexing, paper trays, or special features may require the exact manufacturer's software. Download it from the official support site for your model, not an unrelated driver-updater utility.

The key point: a successful print from another device tells you where not to start replacing hardware.
