Why Does Windows Keep Changing My Default Printer?

BACK TO THE USER · PRINTERS & DEVICES

You print a document at home, then Windows sends the next one to an office printer or 'Print to PDF.' Windows may be automatically managing the default based on what you used last.

The quick answer

Turn off Let Windows manage my default printer if you want to choose one printer and keep it that way. Then select your preferred printer and set it as the default.

Find the setting in Windows 11

  1. Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
  2. Scroll to Printer preferences or the available options.
  3. Disable Let Windows manage my default printer.
  4. Choose the printer you want and select Set as default when the option becomes available.

Exact placement can change with Windows updates.

Why Windows changes the printer

When automatic management is enabled, Windows may make the last printer used in a location the default. That can be convenient for people moving between office and home, but confusing for anyone expecting one permanent choice.

Applications may remember their own choice

Some programs remember a printer per document or session. If Windows shows the correct default but one app keeps selecting another device, check that application's print dialog. A PDF viewer and a browser may behave differently even on the same PC.

Watch for duplicate installations

If the printer was reinstalled several times, Windows may have multiple nearly identical entries. A 'Copy 1' version may point to a different port. Try a test page from each known entry before removing old ones, especially if the computer is used for scanning.

What if the default keeps disappearing?

A shared or network printer can disappear when the computer changes networks or loses access to the print server. In that case, the issue isn't only the default setting. Check network availability, driver installation, and whether the printer is actually online.

Once you tell Windows to stop choosing for you, the default should become much more predictable.
