Why Won't My Computer Recognize My USB Device?
BACK TO THE USER · PRINTERS & DEVICES
You plug in a flash drive, keyboard, or camera and nothing happens—or Windows reports an unrecognized USB device. The cable, port, device, or driver could all be involved.
The quick answer
Test the device in another known-working USB port and, if possible, another computer. If the device uses a detachable cable, try a cable capable of data transfer, not one that only charges. Don't format a storage device just because Windows suggests it.
Start with safe comparisons
- Disconnect the device and look for obvious bent pins or cable damage.
- Try a different USB port directly on the computer, avoiding a suspect hub.
- If available, test a known-working USB device in the same port.
- Try the original device on another compatible computer.
Those comparisons help determine whether the port, cable, or device is failing.
Charging doesn't prove data works
A phone may charge over USB while the computer can't see its files. Some cables carry power but not data, and phones may require you to unlock the screen and select a file-transfer mode. Cameras may use special connection modes too.
Look in Device Manager
Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand the appropriate device category or Universal Serial Bus controllers. A warning symbol or an Unknown USB Device entry can provide a clue, but it doesn't identify a single cause by itself.
Storage devices need extra caution
If a flash drive is detected in Disk Management but not File Explorer, it may be missing a drive letter. If it appears RAW, Unallocated, or asks to initialize, stop before accepting if the files matter. Formatting or initializing can destroy recovery options.
When to stop plugging it in
If the USB port is physically loose, the connector becomes unusually hot, or the device repeatedly disconnects with electrical warnings, stop testing. A shorted device can damage other hardware. Seek diagnosis rather than forcing the connection.
