Do I Really Need Antivirus Software Anymore?

BACK TO THE USER · SCAMS & SECURITY

Windows already includes security protections, so why would anyone pay for another antivirus? The answer depends on the device, the person using it, and what protection or support they're actually getting.

The quick answer

Most supported Windows 11 computers already include Microsoft Defender Antivirus, built-in firewall features, and other security tools. For many home users, keeping those protections active and Windows updated is a sensible baseline. Extra paid security software is optional, not an automatic requirement.

What built-in protection does

Defender checks files and programs for known and suspicious threats, and Windows Security shows your protection status. SmartScreen and browser protections can warn about certain malicious downloads or sites. None of them can guarantee a user will never be fooled by a scam or malicious attachment.

Check whether you're protected

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Review Virus & threat protection and any alerts.
  3. Check that Windows Update is working.
  4. Review your backups, especially for irreplaceable personal files.

If another antivirus product is installed, Windows may hand real-time scanning over to it. Running multiple competing real-time antivirus engines can create compatibility or performance problems.

When a paid product might be worthwhile

Some packages add centralized management, family features, or support that a household or small business values. Compare the actual features and renewal cost; don't assume the product with the scariest advertisements offers the best protection.

Antivirus isn't a backup or a judgment substitute

Ransomware, account takeovers, phishing, and hardware failure all require more than scanning software. Use unique passwords, multifactor authentication, sensible browsing habits, and tested backups. Security is a collection of habits and layers, not a single green checkmark.

What not to buy

Ignore surprise pop-ups saying your device has hundreds of infections and offering an immediate subscription. Use Windows Security and trusted vendor sites to investigate real alerts.
