My Bluetooth Headphones Say Connected, but Nothing Plays
BACK TO THE USER · VIDEO & SOUND
Bluetooth happily reports 'Connected.' Your ears report otherwise. The missing piece may be the selected audio output, a call-versus-music profile, or an old pairing that no longer behaves.
The quick answer
Being connected to Bluetooth is not the same as being selected for audio. Open Settings → System → Sound and choose your headphones under Output, then test again.
Start with the headphones
Confirm the headphones are powered on, charged, and not connected to a different nearby phone. Some models support simultaneous connections but prioritize one device's audio. Pause playback on the other device and try again.
Choose the Windows sound output
- Open Settings → System → Sound.
- Select your Bluetooth headphones under Output.
- Check the volume in Windows and on the headset.
- Try a different app or sound file to rule out one muted application.
Why calls can sound different from music
Bluetooth headsets may use different modes when the microphone is active. A meeting app can switch to a hands-free calling mode with different audio quality or routing. Close unused call apps, then retest regular playback. If the headphones expose multiple output names, select the one intended for your task.
Reconnect cleanly
Turn Bluetooth off and on, then reconnect. If the pairing continues to fail, open Settings → Bluetooth & devices, remove the headphones, and pair them again following the manufacturer's instructions. Be ready to put the headphones in pairing mode.
Don't overlook application routing
Windows Volume mixer can send one app to another output. A browser can play through laptop speakers while a meeting app uses the headset. Check each app's device setting rather than assuming the Windows default controls everything.
When hardware is suspect
Try the headphones on a second device. If they fail everywhere, investigate the headphones or their battery. If other Bluetooth audio works on the PC, focus on that particular pairing or model instead of replacing the computer's Bluetooth adapter immediately.
