What Is the Difference Between HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB-C?
BACK TO THE USER · VIDEO & SOUND
Three plugs can look like three ways to connect a screen. The catch is that the connector shape doesn't tell you everything about resolution, refresh rate, charging, or what a cable can actually carry.
The quick answer
HDMI and DisplayPort are primarily digital display connections. USB-C is a connector that may carry data, power, and sometimes video, depending on the devices and the supported modes. Not all USB-C ports can drive a monitor.
HDMI: common on TVs and monitors
HDMI carries digital video and, on compatible equipment, audio. It's widely used for televisions, game consoles, monitors, and laptops. Different HDMI versions and cables support different combinations of resolution, refresh rate, and features.
DisplayPort: common on computers
DisplayPort also carries digital video and audio and is widely used on desktops and high-refresh monitors. Some DisplayPort setups support daisy-chaining displays when the monitor and graphics hardware support it. A DisplayPort-shaped port isn't a promise of any particular performance level.
USB-C: the most confusing one
USB-C tells you the physical connector, not everything it can do. A USB-C port might support only charging and basic data, or it might support DisplayPort Alternate Mode, USB4, or Thunderbolt capabilities. The cable matters too: a charging-only cable may not carry the signal a monitor needs.
Before buying an adapter
- Identify the exact computer model and its video-output specifications.
- Check the monitor's input types and desired resolution/refresh rate.
- Verify whether the computer's USB-C port supports video output, if that's your plan.
- Check the adapter or dock's supported displays and power-delivery requirements.
Why a splitter isn't a second display
A simple HDMI splitter generally mirrors the same source across two screens. Extending the desktop to different content requires the computer to output separate displays, using compatible ports, a suitable dock, or other supported hardware.
The safest shopping rule: match the computer, monitor, cable, and adapter specifications as a set, not by which plug fits.
