Why Can't Anyone Hear Me on Zoom?

BACK TO THE USER · VIDEO & SOUND

You can hear everyone perfectly, but nobody can hear you. Before blaming Zoom—or replacing the microphone—check whether Windows and the meeting app are listening to the same input device.

The quick answer

Look for the meeting's Mute/Unmute control, then open Zoom's audio settings and select the microphone you actually want to use. If the microphone doesn't respond there, check Windows microphone permissions and input settings.

Check the meeting controls first

Zoom may start meetings muted, and a host can sometimes restrict participant audio. Click the small arrow next to the microphone control to choose the input device. Headsets often provide a separate mute button on a cable, earcup, or boom arm—make sure it isn't engaged.

Test the microphone in Windows

  1. Open Settings → System → Sound.
  2. Under Input, choose the correct microphone.
  3. Speak and watch the input level or use the available test.
  4. If Windows hears you, focus on Zoom's selected device and permissions.

Check privacy permissions

Open Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone. Make sure microphone access is allowed and that desktop apps can use the microphone where appropriate. If you use Zoom in a browser, the browser also needs permission for the website.

Watch for competing devices

A webcam, laptop microphone, Bluetooth headset, and USB microphone can all appear as possible inputs. Windows may default to one while Zoom uses another. A Bluetooth headset's call mode can also change the available inputs and sound quality.

Try a local recording

Use Windows Sound Recorder or another trusted recording app for a short test. If the local recording works but Zoom doesn't, the problem is more likely in Zoom settings. If no app records anything, examine the mic, its connection, or system permissions.

Still silent?

Restart the app and reconnect the device. For business calls, keep a backup option like dial-in audio if supported. Avoid last-minute driver downloads from unknown websites minutes before a meeting.
